PRESIDENT JAMES BUCHANAN. 5 ½ x 4 ½ - inch salted paper print, hand-cut oval. This is a copy of a daguerreotype by Mathew Brady. As the daguerreotype was likely a reversed mirror image, this copy reverses it back to how the subject would normally look. There are several variants of this image, most clearly shown in the arrangement of the cloth tied around his neck. Buchanan was unable to mend the divisions in the nation, and as his tenure ended in 1861 the Civil War was about to break out. There is slight retouching, and mild soil. [3-]
