Pratt & Letchworth cast iron Four Seat Brake, circa 1890, featuring a four horse team comprising two cream and two caramel horses, each fitted with articulated wheels which provides them with a galloping motion, drawing a large, well appointed carriage finished in glossy black with side lanterns, yellow accents, and red button-tufted seats, complete with all eight original passengers, including the blanketed coachman, (excellent plus, with minor chipping, the seat pin on the bottom of the coachman is broken off, the back shaft is slightly bent). (14) length 27in. (68.6cm.) This toy was displayed on a shelf high atop a bookshelf in the Hegarty home. While decorating for Christmas Mrs. Hegarty was balanced with one foot on a ladder and the other on a desk. She slipped and reached for the shelf to secure her position. She grabbed this toy instead, as she fell the toy came with her, just missing a Tiffany lamp. Although she sustained injuries, the Brake survived intact except for the bent shaft.
