PAIR 16TH C GILT-WOOD FIGURES - The Virgin and a Bishop or Saint, South German, Franconian, School of Tilman Riemenschneider (c 1460-1531), parcel gilt and polychromed carved wooden figures on integral molded socle, roughly 34" tall, 10" wide, 4" deep, the figures are laid to reinforcing planks shaped to their forms but becoming haloes with gilt scraffito, with custom carved 19th c solid chestnut brackets in Gothic style, 13 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 11 3/4" tall, Mary lacks both hands, Bishop is missing his staff and part of his right hand, has a repaired nose, redecorated long ago. From the estate of Anne Bigelow Stern of New York City.
