signed with initials and dated '54 l.l., oil on canvas 54 by 47 cm.; 21 1/4 by 18 1/2 in. In 1859 Puvis exhibited a larger version of this painting at the Paris Salon. The picture is now in the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Marseille. Edmond About wrote of this picture ten years later: On se rappelle l'etonnement et le respect quasi religieux qui se manifesterent dans le public devant la premiere oeuvre de ce peintre. C'etait, si j'ai bonne memoire, une chasse traitee dans le gout antique et dans le style decoratif; il s'est passe dix ans depuis ce debut, cette revelation, cette promesse...
