LAND DOCUMENT SIGNED (''WILL PENN''), BETWEEN PENN AND WILLIAM WIGAN

being an indenture for the sale to William Wigan, Milliner of St Martin's in the Field, Middlesex, of 500 acres of land "within the Province of Pensilvania" for the sum of five shillings, with an annual rent "of one pepper Corne onely", set out in formulaic manner by a professional scribe, with the incipit engrossed and decorated with flourishes, spaces left for individual details filled in with a different ink, on vellum (c.480 x 305mm.), clear impression of armorial seal in red wax attached by label, 19 January 1681/2; two internal tears at folds (c.15 and 30mm.) not affecting text

NOTE

Signed in England the year after Penn received the crown grant of Pennsylvania, and just months before he set sail for the colony.
