NOTE
Executed in 1926, this work is an example of Tchelitchew's experimentation with what he labeled 'laconic' composition: capturing "simultineity" or the expression of movement through time and space, concerns similar to cubism, but more closely tied to figural depiction. The medium of sand, coffee-grounds and paint was used in a majority of Tchelitchew's paintings of this period, particularly in 1927-28. "At times...he piled up so heavy a texture that, in [Tchelitchew's] words, 'The surface of my paintings looked like maps of earth in low relief.'" (James Thrall Soby, Tchelitchew,: Paintings, Drawings, 1942, p. 17).
