PAUL PEEL (1860-1892) PONT-AVEN I signed, titled and dated "1881" oil on canvas 84.4 by 56.5 cm. 33 by 22 in. Pont-Aven, a popular summer resort area in the Brittany, had a special appeal for artists who were drawn to rural subjects, picturesque costumes, and the tableaux of pastoral life. Peel first went there in 1881 when he painted this fine canvas, and returned each year for a decade. Baker comments: "Contrary to the concerns of Impressionist painters, who willingly sacrified solid form and well-defined space in their pursuit of the sensation of light and colour, Peel sought to portray brilliant daylight while yet remaining faithful to the adademic principles he had been taught...Using the near-flat surfaces of background buildings as mirrors, dazzling sunlight is reflected back to the spectator."
