Notes: Instruments de musique sur un guéridon appartient à une période curieusement mal connue de Pablo Picasso, l'essentiel des travaux consacrés à son époque cubiste s'attachant surtout aux années 1907-14, c'est-à-dire antérieures à la réalisation de ce tableau. En effet, bien que cette oeuvre ait été datée de 1914 par Christian Zervos dans son catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre du peintre, il n'y a guère de doute qu'elle fut terminée plus tard. Pierre Daix et Joan Rosselet suggèrent l'hiver 1914-15 dans leur catalogue raisonné de la production cubiste de Picasso, mais il est plus probable qu'il faille retarder encore d'un an l'achèvement de cette toile et la situer plutôt durant l'hiver 1915-16.

Plusieurs éléments étayent cette nouvelle datation. Le premier, déterminant, est une photographie où figure notre tableau dans un état inachevé (fig. 1). Cette photographie appartient à une suite de clichés pris le même jour (Picasso est revêtu du même costume inhabituel - chemise blanche, cravate, large ceinture en tissu) et au même endroit (l'atelier du 5bis, rue Schoelcher), montrant l'artiste devant une de ses toiles. La séquence photographique n'est pas datée mais elle est datable au plus tôt de début 1915, comme le suggère Anne Baldassari qui la publia pour la première fois1. John Richardson, quant à lui, penche pour septembre ou octobre 19152.

Un autre élément en faveur d'une date plus tardive que celle habituellement assignée à ce tableau est sa palette, beaucoup plus sombre que celles des toiles, souvent qualifiées de "rococo", peintes en 1914 et début 1915. Par ailleurs, le semis régulier de pointillés verts sur fond vert noirâtre, au milieu de la composition (et gris sur noir à gauche de ce plan) n'est pas du tout de même nature que les innombrables allusions au pointillisme, teintées d'ironie, qui caractérisent les oeuvres dites "rococo" - au contraire, cette régularité et monochromie des petits points apparaissent très souvent dans les oeuvres de 1915-16 (un exemple parfait est Guitare, clarinette, bouteille sur un guéridon (fig. 2; daté de 1916 par Picasso au recto). On peut même dire qu'il s'agit là d'une véritable transformation de la citation espiègle du pointillisme telle que Picasso la pratiquait volontiers en 1914-15 en quelque chose qui ne renvoie plus du tout à une quelconque libération de la couleur mais tend au contraire vers le lugubre. Il ne semble pas que les pointillés "rococo" aient égayé notre tableau dans son premier état (quoique la photographie d'atelier ne soit pas assez nette pour que l'on puisse totalement exclure cette possibilité), mais il est très clair qu'ils jouaient un rôle dominant dans le premier état de l'Homme accoudé sur une table (voir note 2; Pinacothèque Giovanni et Marella Agnelli, Turin; fig. 3) visible dans une photographie anterieure à celles de la séquence mentionnée plus haut, alors qu'au contraire le semi régulier (absent de ce premier état) sera l'élément stylistique le plus important du tableau dans son état définitif.

Enfin, Daix et Rosselet font à juste titre voisiner Instruments de musique sur un guéridon avec Guitare sur un guéridon (fig. 4), qu'ils datent de 1915, dans leur catalogue raisonné. Or, notent-ils pourtant, Zervos signale que cette peinture "a été commencée en 1915 et reprise longtemps après," indication trop précise pour n'avoir pas été directement fournie par Picasso à son pieux et zélé ami. Etant donné la proximité stylistique de ce tableau avec celui de la collection Saint Laurent-Bergé, il est plus que probable que ce dernier ait subi le même sort, d'autant que les pentimenti et recouvrements de toutes sortes y abondent.

La période à laquelle appartient cette toile est une des plus douloureuses pour Picasso. La réalité de la guerre a fini par le toucher de prêt: non seulement il se sent seul, bon nombre de ses amis étant au front ou ayant quitté la France, comme son marchand Kahnweiler, afin d'éviter d'avoir à prendre part au conflit, mais les nouvelles sont de plus en plus noires (en mai 1915, par exemple, Georges Braque, son compagnon de route, est blessé). Et c'est encore pire dans sa vie privée: la santé de son grand amour, Eva Gouel, qu'il avait célébrée nommément dans bon nombre de toiles cubistes, se détériore tout au long de l'année 1915 (elle meurt le 14 décembre). Même si Picasso a prouvé à de nombreuses reprises, contrairement aux clichés biographiques qu'il a lui-même encouragés, qu'il pouvait très bien "compartimenter" vie et travail (et produire des oeuvres joyeuses à des moments d'une tristesse inouïe, et vice-versa), il semble que pour une période d'au moins six mois sa palette se soit considérablement assombrie (quand des couleurs vives sont employées, comme dans le fameux Arlequin du Museum of Modern Art (fig. 5), elles sont le plus souvent contrebalancée par une dominance du noir). Instruments de musique sur un guéridon confirme cette tendance générale que l'on peut qualifier de mélancolique sans risquer de faire de la psychologie à bon marché: non seulement le fond relativement peu modulé du tableau est gris sombre, mais le noir lui-même y est fortement présent, et toutes les couleurs, même le rose, y sont comme cassées (sans parler du fait qu'il y a aussi plusieurs plans gris se démarquant du fond lui-même).

Mais si l'atmosphère dégagée par ce tableau est mélancolique, c'est peut-être aussi parce que il a été peint dans une période de crise de la vie de l'artiste, non plus biographique cette fois, mais esthétique--une crise picturale que Picasso avait d'abord déjouée par l'ironie, lors de l'été 1914 passé à Avignon, multipliant les auto-citations cocasses et les pieds de nez à l'égard des admirateurs respectueux d'un cubisme en passe de devenir un nouvel académisme. Nulle dérision ici au contraire. Il semble même que pour un certain temps Picasso se soit reposé une question qu'il avait souvent posée puis délibérément refoulée depuis l'été infructueux qu'il avait passé à Cadaquès en 1910, question redevenue brûlante en raison de l'activité artistique et notamment du soutien apporté par son ami Guillaume Apollinaire aux générations montantes: "Et si l'abstraction était possible?" Certes, on peut identifier de nombreux éléments figuratifs dans cette toile, mais il faut déjà faire un certain effort pour cela. Chacun des trois pieds éléphantesques du guéridon sont représentés différemment, par exemple: une jambe à angle droit à gauche, une jambe se terminant par une sorte de pantoufle au milieu, une courbe molle et grasse à droite - seule la couleur noire leur donne un air de famille. Les franges du tapis (apparemment un attribut obligatoire de tout guéridon dans un intérieur bourgeois de l'époque), noires aussi, ressemblent plutôt à la balustrade en pierre ou ciment d'un perron. Quant aux instruments de musique, quels sont-ils, exactement? Daix et Rosselet voient "une guitare verticale et un violon horizontal"3. Il me semble plutôt qu'il y a deux guitares superposées, ou deux vues de la même guitare dans une position différente (il y a deux jeux de cordes se croisant quasiment à angle droit), et partageant le même trou, nombril central du tableau, mauvais oeil noir cerné de jaune qui confronte directement le spectateur. Le "violon vertical" serait-il l'instrument au long cou que l'on aperçoit en rose en haut à droite? Rien n'est moins sûr (il n'y a aucune ouïe - attribut que Picasso n'hésite pourtant pas d'habitude à faire figurer). On penserait plutôt, vu la taille réduite, à un youkoulélé--mais le long cou étant gris, et non plus rose, il pourrait aussi appartenir à un autre instrument (à une clarinette, par exemple).

Cela dit, la difficulté qu'il peut y avoir à identifier tel ou tel élément figuratif n'est pas un trait spécifique de cette toile ou de cette période - elle est partie prenante du cubisme de Picasso, de son aspect proprement ludique. Par contre, ce qui est plus rare dans son oeuvre cubiste, et n'advient qu'aux moments de crise, moment où, ce n'est pas un hasard, il s'interroge visiblement sur la possibilité de l'abstraction, c'est la multiplication de plans colorés géométriques qui semblent libres de tout devoir de dénotation. Qui plus est, ces plans sont non seulement empilés de bas en haut, mais superposés en épaisseur, avec ici où là des ombres portées par leur tranche (autour du plan oblong vert foncé en haut, du large plan vert clair au milieu, à droite d'un des plan roses) ombres qui leur confinent une existence quasi matérielle d'objet (il n'y a pas grande différence entre ces ombres portées et celle du "youkoulélé"). Tout se passe comme si Picasso donnait dans cette oeuvre et dans plusieurs de ses contemporaines une interprétation du cubisme strictement identique à celle que venait juste d'élaborer Kazimir Malévitch lorsqu'il avait peu à peu augmenté la taille et le nombre de plans géométriques de couleur unie au détriment des objets eux-même, jusqu'à finir pas se passer totalement de ces derniers.

L'abstraction menaçait: Picasso, qui s'en méfiait comme de la peste, allait bientôt lui tourner radicalement le dos en s'appuyant sur Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres et en partant pour Rome travailler au ballet Parade. Mais ce tableau et ses semblables démontrent fort bien que, s'il l'avait voulu, Picasso aurait pu être aussi un très grand peintre abstrait. Heureusement pour Piet Mondrian, Kasimir Malévitch, et autres pionniers, qu'il ne leur ait pas coupé l'herbe sous les pieds.

Instruments de musique sur un guéridon belongs to a curiously little-known period in the career of Pablo Picasso, the scholarly works devoted to Cubism being for the most part focused on the years 1907-14, i.e. prior to creation of the painting in question. Indeed, although this piece was dated back to 1914 by Christian Zervos in his catalogue raisonné of the artist's work, it was certainly completed later. In their catalogue raisonné of Picasso's cubist production, Pierre Daix and Joan Rosselet date the painting from the winter of 1914-15, although it was probably completed one year later, during the winter of 1915-16.

Several factors point to this new date. The first decisive factor is a photograph showing the Saint Laurent-Bergé painting in an unfinished state (fig. 1). Belonging to a series of shots taken on the same day (where Picasso is wearing the same unusual outfit of a white shirt, tie and wide fabric belt) and in the same location (the studio at 5bis, rue Schoelcher), each photograph shows the artist in front of one of his paintings. Although the sequence of photographs is undated, they can be placed around the start of 1915 at the earliest, as suggested by Anne Baldassari who published them for the very first time,1 or even as late as September or October 1915, as proposed by John Richardson.2
Another factor that would strongly suggest a later date than the one usually attributed to this work is the color palette, much darker than that used in the often described "rococo-style" paintings from 1914 and early 1915. In addition, the regular application of light green dots on a dark green ground in the middle of the composition (and grey on black to the left of this plane) bears no relation to the countless ironic allusions to pointillism that characterize the so-called "rococo" paintings. On the contrary, the grid-like formation of regular rows of monochromatic dots is a stylistic feature that is fairly common in his works from 1915-16 (a prime example being Guitare, clarinette, bouteille sur un guéridon; fig. 2), dated 1916 by Picasso on the front). One can even refer to this as a major transformation from the mischievous references to pointillism made so freely by Picasso in 1914-15 to a rather more somber approach, without any attempt at color liberation. Although the photograph taken in the studio is not clear enough to exclude the possibility, the initial version of the present painting does not appear to feature rococo/pointillist dots while they clearly dominated in the original version of Homme accoudé sur une table (see note 2; Pinacothèque Giovanni et Marella Agnelli, Turin, fig. 3) as a photograph taken before those of the sequence mentioned above attests. In the final state of the latter work regular rows of monochromatic dots, which were absent from its first state, would almost entirely replace the earlier pointillist dots and become the most important stylistic feature of the painting.

Finally, Daix and Rosselet rightly juxtapose Instruments de musique sur un guéridon with Guitare sur un guéridon (fig. 4), dated 1915 in their catalogue raisonné. Nonetheless, as they also note, Zervos indicated that this latter piece "was started in 1915 and resumed much later", a statement too bold not to be a direct quote from Picasso confiding to his loyal and zealous friend. Given the stylistic proximity of Guitare sur un guéridon with the painting from the Saint Laurent-Bergé collection, Instruments de musique sur un guéridon more than likely went through a similar process, as the numerous pentimenti and overpaintings would affirm.

The period to which this painting belongs is one of the most painful in Picasso's life. The realities of war had finally hit home as the artist's loneliness mingled with the knowledge that many of his friends were at the front or had left France, including his dealer Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler, to avoid becoming embroiled in the conflict. And the outlook was becoming increasingly gloomy (in May 1915, for example, Georges Braque, his long-standing companion, was wounded). Picasso's private life took an even greater downturn when his lover, Eva Gouel, much celebrated in so many of his cubist paintings, gradually succumbed to illness throughout 1915 and died on 14 December. Although Picasso proved on many occasions -- contrary to the biographical clichés he himself encouraged -- that he could "compartmentalize" life and work (producing jubilant works at times of incredible sadness, and vice versa), it seems that for a period of six months at least, his palette took on considerably darker overtones (when bright colors are used, as in the famous Arlequin in the Museum of Modern Art (fig. 5), they are generally offset by a dominance of black). Instruments de musique sur un guéridon confirms this general trend that one can safely describe as melancholic without being accused of crude psychology: not only is the subtly modulated background a dark grey, but black is extremely prominent and all the colors, even pink, appear to be broken (not to mention the several grey planes standing out against the background itself).

But if the general feeling of this painting is melancholy, perhaps it is also because it coincided with a time of crisis. The crisis in question was pictorial rather than biographical, and Picasso had at first been able to deflect it with ironic flair, during the summer of 1914 spent in Avignon, through comical self-citations and mocking references to cubism geared at the admirers of this style as it stood poised to become a new form of academicism. No hint of derision is found in Instruments de musique sur un guéridon, however. Indeed, it even seems that an old question, one that Picasso had suppressed following the unfruitful summer in Cadaquès in 1910, had resurfaced for a while, prompted by the artistic developments at the time and the support given by his friend Guillaume Apollinaire to the next generation: "Is abstraction possible?" One can of course identify a number of figurative elements in this painting, but doing so takes a certain amount of effort. For example, each of the pedestal's three elephantine legs are depicted differently: a right-angled leg to the left, a leg sporting a slipper-like shoe in the middle, and a soft, fleshy curve on the right and only the color black provides a sense of commonality. The fringes of the mat spread over the guéridon (apparently a compulsory feature of any bourgeois home at this time) -- also black -- are more akin to the silhouette of a stone or cement balustrade of a staircase. As for the musical instruments, what are they exactly? Daix and Rosselet see "a vertical guitar and a horizontal violin"3. It seems to me, rather, that there are two overlapping guitars, or two views of the same guitar placed in different positions (the two sets of strings intersecting at almost right angles), united by the same hole as the central navel of the painting, a black eye rimmed with yellow that directly challenges the viewer. What about the "vertical violin" -- is it the long-necked instrument that one can see on the top right? Nothing is less certain since no sound hole -- a feature that Picasso usually incorporates -- can be seen. The compact size leads one to think of a ukulele although the long grey neck (rather than pink, which is the color of the instrument's body) would readily lend itself to another instrument, such as a clarinet.

In any event, the difficulty in identifying particular figurative elements is not specific to this painting or period -- it is integral to Picasso's cubism and its playful nature. Much more significant here is Picasso's use of multiple geometric color planes that seem entirely free of any denotative function, a stylistic feature that is rare in his cubist works -- only emerging at times of crisis when, not coincidentally, the artist visibly explores the realm of abstraction. Moreover, these planes are not only superimposed from bottom to top but also in layers, occasionally casting shadows (around the oblong dark green plane at the top, the wide light green plane in the middle, to the right of one of the pink planes) that give them an almost tangible, object-like appearance. Indeed, there is no great difference between these shadows and the one cast by the "ukulele". In this painting, and in several of the works completed around this time, Picasso seems to be (unknowingly) mirroring the interpretation of cubism that had just been developed by Kasimir Malevith, who had gradually increased the size and number of geometric, block color planes to the detriment of the objects themselves and to the point of abandoning the latter altogether.

As abstraction loomed near, Picasso, who detested the concept with a passion, soon turned his back on it in radical style as he began drawing inspiration from Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, leaving for Rome to work on the ballet Parade. However, as this painting and others like it demonstrate, Picasso had all the potential of becoming a great abstract painter. Fortunately for Piet Mondrian, Kasimir Malevich, and the other abstract pioneers, he had not beaten them to the post.
