Otto Mueller (1874 Liebau/Riesengebirge - 1930 Obernigk bei Breslau). Paar am Tisch (Selbstbildnis mit Maschka, Absinthtrinkerin). 1922-25 Lithograph in colours .Karsch 155 III b (of III A). Signed and numbered 31/60. On firm brownish paper. 39 x 29,2 cm (15,3 x 11,4 in). Sheet: 53,3 x 41,3 cm (21 x 16,3 in). Provenienz: Private collection Germany. For this double portrait Otto Mueller has presented the figures in close-up, with Maschka's torso dominating the representation. However, the corresponding heads of the two subjects are particularly fine in their dreamy familiarity. Compared to them, the visually so strongly emphasised body of the woman seems minor. The broad strokes of the chalk freely covering the sheet attest to the spontaneity of the work. Unlike his Expressionist colleagues, Otto Mueller added a painterly and ideal component to his lithographs, which is what makes these prints so appealing. [KD]In good condition. With soft mount and light staining. Right margin with isolated soft handling creases. Lower right corner with minor crease mark. Upper corners loosely mounted on backing on the reverse, lower left corner with remains of an old mount, each minimally pushing through to the front.
