Otto Freundlich (1878 Stolp/Pommern - 1943 umgekommen im KZ Lublin-Maidanek). Komposition. Um 1930/35 Gouache . Monogrammed lower right. On cardboard primed white. 26 x 19,6 cm (10,2 x 7,7 in), the full sheet. Expertise: This work is accompanied by a photo expertise signed by Edda Maillet, Secrétaire générale de l'Assocation 'Les Amies de Jeanne et Otto Freundlich', Paris, and dated 23.12.2006. The gouache will be inclued in the forthcoming supplement to the catalogue raisonné of Otto Freundlich's works Provenienz: Private collection Paris (acquired directly from the artist's wife). In his abstract compositions, Otto Freundlich followed a tradition that - starting from Cubism - turned towards a form of geometric Colour Field painting. The interplay of solid forms with the touches of colour is the basis of the actual composition. In this endeavour, Freundlich discovered ever new fields for himself, thus opening up a broad theatre of operations for non-representational painting in his day. Unsurprisingly, his compositions are reminiscent of mosaics and ornamental tapestries, which are also represented in this artist's aeuvre. For all the diversity of form, these works reveal a dynamic drive, visible in the diagonal current, permeated by a broad-ranging horizontal thrust. [KD]In good condition. Minimally not fresh and slightly stained. Margins irregularly trimmed and partly slightly bumped or rubbed. Slight craquelé in the luscious areas, there partly with tiny colour losses.
