En 1930, le compositeur et metteur en scène autrichien Arnold Schönberg invita Oskar Schlemmer à réaliser le décor de la pièce de théâtre Die Glückliche Hand (La Main Heureuse). Schönberg souhaitait, par le truchement d'une mise en scène sombre, exprimer l'idée que l'homme répète tout au long de sa vie les mêmes erreurs.

In 1930, the Austrian composer and director Arnold Schönberg invited Oskar Schlemmer to create the set for the play Die Glückliche Hand (The Fortunate Hand). In addition to an almost black stage, Schönberg wished to express through this stage play the ultimate futility of life, and how man is doomed to repeat the same errors over and over again.
