Oskar Laske(Czernowitz 1874-1951 Vienna) "Absalom", c. 1935, inscribed O. Laske and Absalon 78 (Opus), tempera on canvas, 85 x 95 cm, framed, (K)Provenance: private property, ViennaAbsalom, David's third son, was forced to flee, having saved his sister Tamar's honour by taking revenge on his half-brother Amnon (2 Samuel, 13). Having been called back upon Joab's intervention, he instigated a revolt against David in Hebron. David and a few of his followers managed to escape across the River Jordan. Persecuting David, Absalom was defeated by Ephraim in a forest, and when he tried to flee, his hair got caught in the branches of an oak and he was killed by Joab (2 Samuel 15-19).
