OOC - 17th C. 'Still Life with Musical Instruments' from the School of Evaristo Baschenis (Bergamo, Italy, 1617-1677) depicting a black lacquer and carved ivory traveling desk on a carpet draped table top along with two inverted lutes, a small harp having a blue silk ribbon, a violin, a small book of music, another small book with an apple, all overhung by a heavy gold embroidered and bullion fringed crimson drape. Labels verso from Vassar College and Berkshire Museum indicated loans from the Coll. Arnold Seligmann, Rey & Co. , New York. Purchased by consignor in New York in the late 1940s. In a fabulous vintage Italian hand carved and water gilt acanthus leaf frame, SS: 34" x 39 1/2", OS: 42" x 47 1/2". Relined on replacement stretcher, minor inpainting above the desk lockplate, in the umber background to right and along bottom edge.
