Very Rare Early Stoneware Jar with Incised Sloop and Floral Decorations, Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with open loop handles and tooled foot and shoulder, decorated on one side with a finely-incised design of a sloop, highlighted in cobalt. Reverse decorated with an incised flower accented with numerous dashes and wavy lines within the blossom and highlighted in bright cobalt blue. The distinctive form of this jar is consistent with the work of Clarkson Crolius, Sr., and John Remmey III of Manhattan, NY, during the early part of the 19th century. Manhattan stoneware featuring designs other than floral motifs are considered highly unusual. 3" hairline crack at base, continuing 2" onto underside. Minor rim chips. Two in-the-making, glazed-over base chips. Hairline on underside of one handle, which does not continue through to top surface of handle. H 9 1/8".
