(26.8cm.) wide 51/2in. (14cm.) deep excluding base Executed circa 1937 this work is unique PROVENANCE Given by the artist directly to the late Mr Marcus and Mrs Brumwell, England circa 1937-38. Thence by descent to the present owner. LITERATURE H. Read & L. Martin, Naum Gabo, London 1957 (a larger version illustrated no. 45). R. Alley, Catalogue of Tate Gallery's Collection of Modern Art: Other than works by British artists, London 1981, pp. 243-244. S. Nash & J. Merkert, Naum Gabo Sixty Years of Constructivism, Munich 1985, no. 35.5, p. 219 (a larger version illustrated p. 76, in colour, and p. 108). NOTES In 1936-37 Marcus Brumwell of the Stuart Advertising Agency, suggested that Gabo design advertising and display materials for the airline Imperial Airways. Gabo apparently executed two designs; a circular display for inclusive tours and a concave globe map. Nothing came of the advertising project although Marcus Brumwell acquired the present work which was probably made especially for him at this time. Two other studies for Monument for an Airport are on display at present at the Tate Modern, London.
