MICK NAMARARI TJAPALTJARI (CIRCA 1926 - 1998)
Mouse Dreaming, 2002
synthetic polymer paint on linen
124 x 155 cm
Provenance: Papunya Tula Artists: Cat. no. MN970853 Niagara Galleries Private Collection, Vic Sold with original art centre documentation Mick Namarari's paintings invoked a whole cosmology. A broader spiritual meaning shaped his perception of relations between the human and non-human world. Visually this consciousness manifests itself in his art, most especially in his figureless paintings, exemplified in his 'Mouse Dreaming' paintings, in their representation of space. The hypnotic minimalist fields of dots suggest the "microscopic life of the desert" and the intimate placement of the artist within his subject, not apart from it. This painting depicts the Tjunginpa (Mouse) Dreaming site of Tjunginpa, a hill north west of the Kintore community in this minimal style. The overall dotting represents the footprints of the mouse and also Kamurarrpa, an edible berry, which is eaten by the mouse. Men of the Tjapaltjarri kinship group are custodians for the ceremonies associated with this mythology.
