Portrait of a Girl inscribed on the reverse Ferrier? both oil on panel Although the artist was born in Brussels, virtually nothing is known of his career until his appearance in Rome in 1646. He seems to have remained there until 1654 or 1656 when he received permission to open a drawing school in his native Brussels. After several years, he journeyed to Amsterdam and there chose to ally himself with the French Société des Missions Etrangères. It was while he was active in Amsterdam from 1656 - circa 1661 that he seems to have concentrated most heavily on portraiture and in particular portraiture of children. The present lot is accompanied by a copy of a certificate from W. R. Valentiner dated May, 22, 1954 in which he suggests a date of execution of circa 1655-1660, during Sweert's late Brussels or early Amsterdam period. In addition to portraits, the artist painted religious and allegorical paintings as well as genre scenes. The present pair of paintings has been requested for exhibition in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut portion of the current Sweerts exhibition, Michael Sweerts 1618-1664, on view in Hartford from September 20-December 1, 2002.
