Max Bohm (American/French, 1868-1923), "Dr. Albert R. Baker", oil on board, signed and dated "92" lower right, inscribed "Dr. Baker, portrait painted by Max Bohm in the year 1890" (sic) in pencil en verso, 10 1/2 in. x 9 in., in a period, possibly original, cove molded gilt and gessoed wood frame. Note: The Ohio-born Bohm spent most of his career in Europe where he earned a reputation as a portrait, landscape, and genre painter. At the age of 19 he entered the Académie Julien where he studied under Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911) and Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888); the following year he had his debut at the Paris Salon. In 1891 Bohm returned to his hometown of Cleveland, where his artistic reputation preceded him. He spent the next several years working on a series of portraits of prominent Ohioans; it was during this time the portrait of Dr. Baker was completed. In 1894 Bohm returned to Europe, traveling to France, Holland, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and England. He returned permanently to the United States in 1911. Reference: Haverstock, et al.
