BREAK UP, CACHE RIVER signed with initials; titled on a label on the reverse oil on canvas 61 by 81.3 cm. 24 by 32 in. This impressive canvas, painted in 1926, shows the essentials of Cullen's many strengths when he tackled his favorite subject, the Laurentian landscape in the grip of winter: striking composition, first-hand knowledge and truth to the subject, ingenious handling of pigments and a richer choice of subtle colours than initially is evident. His dealer and friend William Watson wrote of Cullen: "Cullen has never been a drawing room painter of snow, but tramping out in wintry weather, he has met his landscapes face to face...You may imagine the difficulties: miles of tramping through snow with sketch box, canvas and easel, freezing fingers, stiffened paints and other physical obstacles that would have daunted many a man of less endurance and will. There was little encouragement and, for most of his work, the only reward was the joy of accomplishment". This work is in the Cullen Inventory as no. 1022.
