signed 'A. MERCIE ROMA' 28 1/4 in. (71.7 cm.) high, including Brescian marble socle LITERATURE S. Kjellberg, "Les Bronzes du XIXe Siecle," Paris, 1987; p. 488, illus. for a bronze example During his almost fifty-year career as an acclaimed sculptor, Mercie's work was well received both critically and publicly. While still a student at the French Academy in Rome, he received the Cross of the Legion of Honor. "Dalila," which was created during his sojourn in Rome, was exhibited in bronze at the Salon of 1872 (no. 1787). That example is now at the Musee de Dijon.
