THE SETTLER'S DAUGHTER signed and dated "1911"; titled on a label on the reverse oil on canvas laid down on board 73.7 by 61 cm. 29 by 24 in. Suzor-Coté excelled in painting landscapes, portraits, still life, genre and historical works and was also an accomplished sculptor. His strongest work, because it was heart-felt, was of the landscapes and the residents of his beloved home at Arthabaska. As early as 1894, after study in Paris, Suzor-Coté decided to specialize in portraiture. He did this when portraiture was a dominant profession in 19th century Canada. In 1911, when The Settler's Daughter was painted, Suzor-Coté had begun a series of portraits of the rural folk of Arthabaska. The model for this outstanding portrait is not known. Lacroix comments: "A young girl with a welcoming look is posed in a fall landscape. Her head, covered in a wide shawl, is almost detached from her body and floats in a backdrop of wooded hills at the edge of a lake. Each plane of the landscape is created with parallel vertical strokes of differing application of more or less smooth texture and of varying thickness".
