After the outbreak of World War I Malewitsch worked together with the "Contemporary Lubok publishing house" and created propaganda posters against the Germans. This sheet is one of them. In his printed graphic work the artist follows the function and design of the traditional "Lubok", a Russian popular broadsheet of religious, satiric, informative, patriotic or socio-critical content. Typical for this sort of art is a placative, vividly coloured representation going along with a reduced text which - in this case - has been attributed to Wladimir Maijakowski.
