YOUNG BOY SITTING ON A WAR CANOE stamped with Carr estate stamp watercolour on paper 28.6 by 38.7 cm. 11 1/4 by 15 1/4 in. As early as 1895, Carr travelled north in Vancouver Island to the native communities in Ucluelet and Nootka Sound. Here she painted watercolour portraits, village life and figure studies. Shadbolt comments: "Her dedication to the Indian theme in these early years was important mainly because it provided her with a valuable moral and social purpose for her art, which in turn gave impetus and focus to her creative drive. The Indian theme was also sufficiently complex and compelling to engage her for many years, revealing deeper layers of meaning as he understanding of it developed."
