Contemplation signed 'L.W. HAWKINS' (lower right) watercolour heightened with white 14 x 193/4 in. (35.5 x 50.2 cm.) NOTES Hawkins was born in Essingham near Stuttgart but was brought up in England, joining the navy at a young age but finally settling in France as an artist in 1870. He lived in Grez-sur-Loing a village not far from Barbizon where in the 1870s an artistic community was established comparable to that formed at Barbizon twenty years earlier.
