Best known for his art glass and stained glass lamps, Louis Comfort Tiffany was also an accomplished painter. He was born in New York to the founder of Tiffany & Co., the famous jewelry store. He studied art under George Inness and Samuel Colman, and later in Paris with Leon Bailly. Tiffany was a gifted painter who demonstrated the same keen eye for color and light in paint as he did in his art glass. He was an excellent draftsman and handled his paint application, with quick, unlabored strokes used to create the effects of light and shadow.
Tiffany painted all over the world, including Asia, Africa, Europe, and the United States. He was elected Academician of the National Academy of Design. In 1877, he was one of the secessionist artists that included John La Farge and Augustus Saint- Gaudens who rebelled against the staid National Academy and formed the Society of American Artists. Tiffany was a member of the American Watercolor Society, New York Architectural League, Century Association, National Arts Club, New York Society of Fine Arts, New York Municipal Art Society, New York Etching Club, and the Societe Nationale des beaux Arts. In 1900 he was elected Chevalier of the Legion of Honor of France. He won numerous awards throughout his career, including gold medal at the Paris Exposition, 1900; gold medal, Panama-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco, 1915; and gold medal at the Sesquicentennial Exposition, Philadelphia, 1926. He was art director and president of Tiffany Co., and in 1918 he established the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation for art students at Oyster Bay, Long Island, to which he deeded his art collection, gallery, chapel and country estate.
