Description:

Pushing Off the Boat, Sea Bright, New Jersey signed Louis C. Tiffany and dated 87, l.l. - - oil on canvas 24 x 36 in. (61 x 91.4 cm.) PROVENANCE Estate of the artist Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham, his daughter Descended in the family to the present owners EXHIBITED New York, National Academy of Design, 1888, no. 338 Paris, Universal Exposition, May-Nov. 1889, no. 293 New York, The Grey Art Gallery and Study Center, Louis Comfort Tiffany: The Paintings, Mar.-May 1979, p. 57, no. 33 Pushing off the Boat, Sea Bright was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1888, and was subsequently sent to Paris as Tiffany's entry to the prestigious Universelle Exposition of 1889. The juxtaposition of roughly scumbled waves and delicate, wash-like glazes in the sky with the weave of the canvas, reveals the artist's continued fascination with the manipulation of paint surfaces. The techniques of watercolor, in which the ground plays a role equal to the medium in the suggestion of light and mass, are translated here into oil painting. Tiffany's willingness to experiment with various media also led him to embrace photography, both as an art in its own right and as a tool in developing certain relationships of light and mass in his paintings. His large collection of photographs, both by himself and others, includes a scene of fishermen at Sea Bright (now in the Morse Gallery of Art) that relates directly to the present painting, as well as studies of fisherfolk, working people, boats, and houses from the area, used in other paintings from the same period.
