STILL LIFE signed; titled on a label on the reverse oil on canvas 46.4 by 50.8 cm. 18 1/4 by 20 in. In his choice of subject matter, FitzGerald never ventured far afield from the Winnipeg neighbourhood in which he grew up, or Snowflake, Manitoba, where he spent his summers. He painted the prairies, city streets and the backyards adjacent to his home. FitzGerald is also known for his controlled, compelling still lifes of familiar domestic objects, such as this one. These still lifes informed many of his drawings, paintings and prints from the mid 1930s to the 1950s, although few of them were developed into full-scale oil paintings; this painting, therefore, is one of the rarer FitzGeralds to come to market.
