il profumo, a standing nude initialled: LB bronze, dark and mid-brown patina, on a black wooden base 49 cm., 19 1/4 in. Bistolfi is the most significant of the Italian Symbolist sculptors and his name is eponymous with that movement in Italy. His primary works are funerary monuments in which he was able fully to express his artistic philosophy. His more intimate small-scale works tend towards the stile Liberty, or Art Nouveau. This is well expressed in this statuette of Il Profumo. The figure relates to an unexecuted project for a fountain which also included figures of La Luce and Le Voci.
