NOTE
Léon Spilliaert's seascapes of the 1920s contain much of the symbolic power of his earlier work, though with figurative elements reduced to their essence. At this time he developed a new technique for his coloured works on paper, using a special opaque gouache to achieve a rich finish to the constituent parts of the composition. While discernible from one another, sea and sky are presented as an organic, inseparable whole. While the little boat indicates the presence of human activity, this is secondary to nature, and used to give a sense of scale to the vast sea and sky.
