La fascination de l'artiste pour la grande piété et le caractère primitif du peuple breton s'exprime particulièrement dans Le feu dehors ou Mammau. Il semble que l'artiste ait été fortement inspiré par la région d'Huelgoat située non loin de Pont-Aven. Le lieu est riche en légendes et sa vaste forêt, ainsi que son lac, constituent un décor idéal pour la perpétuation des rites ancestraux.
On ne dispose que de peu de clés pour la lecture de cette scène sinon que Mammau signifie "source d'eau fraîche" en breton et également "cause" ou "origine." Le présent tableau représente des femmes préparant un repas pour leurs voisines. Dans cette scène, le chaudron est porteur d'une double signification. Loin d'être un simple ustensile de cuisine, il apparaît comme un symbole. En effet, dans la mythologie celte, il est le réceptacle de l'abondance et de la grâce divine, on lui attribue également le pouvoir d'apporter l'inspiration aux artistes. Le chaudron occupe aussi une place centrale dans les rites païens où il est, tour à tour l'emblème de l'eau, du feu, des sortilèges, ou encore de la figure féminine.
Le traitement pictural vient renforcer l'impression de mystère qui se dégage cette oeuvre. Les tons purs et sourds employés, les reflets posés sur l'eau ainsi que la douceur de la lumière du crépuscule qui baigne la scène, renforcent l'atmosphère de profond recueillement qui émane du tableau.
Sérusier's fascination for the great piety and primitive character of the Breton people is particularly visible in Le Feu dehors or Mammau. The scene takes place in Huelgoat, a vastly wooded area set high above a lake near Pont-Aven rich in ancestral rituals and legends.
Mammen means "source of fresh water" in Breton, but also "cause" or "origin." The scene depicts women nourishing their neighbors, and the presence of the cauldron is certainly not anodyne. Ancient Celtic mythology, elements were (and still are) highly prevalent in the Breton region and their traditions. The ancient Celts used cauldrons for food and in rituals as an emblem of abundance and divine inspiration. In their mythology and folklore, the cauldron provides infinite sustenance or artistic inspiration. As a pagan ritual tool, the cauldron is mostly symbolic. Most often used to represent the fire or water elements, the cauldron is sometimes employed for mixing herbs, for consecration, or to hold the ingredients for a spell and is generally held to be a feminine symbol.
Sérusier's pictorial treatment of the subject is aptly applied in the present work. With pure, flat tones, Sérusier depicts the reflections in the water and the dawning sun and conjures a quietly meditative atmosphere.
