PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATES OF CHARLES AND YVETTE BLUHDORN
Named after King Louis lX, the Île St. Louis is one of the two islands in the Seine river. According to Marcelle Marquet, the artist's wife and biographer, the Seine was the artist's favorite river. With its lively activity and bustling bridges, the Seine posessed a unique quality which captivated the artist throughout his career. As Andre Dunoyer observes, "The Three M's were talked about incessantly at the beginning of the century, three young men noted for the independence of their art. Matisse, Marquet, Manguin . . .Marquet, for his extraordinary sense of observation, tied to a rare visual acuity and a love of light which he was intensely aware of, particularly the light of Paris which he expressed so admirably, all things which made him the Guardi of the River Seine" (quoted in David F. Setford, "Albert Marquet: from Fauvism to Impressionist?," From Fauvism to Impressionism: Albert Marquet (exhibition catalogue), New York, 2001, p. 7).
