Roussel belonged to the circle of artists that consisted of Vuillard, Denis and Serusier. He studied at the Academie Julian, where he became close to Pierre Bonnard and Felix Vallotton. Discontented by the academic teaching he soon abandoned his studies to become a member of the Nabis when the group was formed in the late 1880s. Seeking the pureness of nature, he settled in the Parisian suburb of L'Etang-la-Ville where he developed a more personal and liberated style. Denys Sutton wrote of Roussel's painting: 'It is this combination of strong and powerful brush-work with an artist's eye for colour which gives his work its character. His painting relies on the belle matiere, which exists independently of the theme, as it does with Monticelli and Theodore Rousseau'(Denys Sutton, Ker Xavier Roussel; An Exhibition (exhibition catalogue), Wildenstein & Co, London, 1964, p. 8).
