Notes: Dr. Valentiner, born in Germany, served as a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1908 and later as director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Detroit Institute of Art among others. Dr. Valentiner wrote extensively, including a monograph Schmidt-Rotluff published in 1920. A 1923 woodcut, by the artist, Portrait of Wilhelm R. Valentiner, II, is currently in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Art.
