Notes: While Bodmer is best known to us for the watercolors he created during his explorations along the Missouri River with Prince Maximiliam of Wied from 1832-1834, he actually achieved greater personal success as an artist later. When he returned to Europe, he went to Germany intially, but by the late 1840s, had settled in Barbizon, France, where he remained for the rest of his life. Here he found inspiration in the woodlands, showing his paintings at several Paris Salons to much acclaim. This painting is listed as number 76.645 in the Karl Bodmer Archives, Swiss institute for Art Research.
