(Leipzig 1794 - 1872 Dresden), circle of, Ideal landscape, monogrammed and dated on the reverse of the original canvas JS1838 (ligated), oil on canvas, 59.5 x 81 cm, framed, (Wo)
Provenance: private collection, Paris
The present painting, whose monogram JS ( for Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld) on the reverse seems to have been added by a later hand, has traditionally been regarded as a work by this artist, who was active in Germany, Vienna and Rome. However, Schnorr was almost exclusively a figure painter, and there seems to be no autonomous landscape by him. According to Dr. Seliger, Munich, an expert on Schnorr von Carolsfeld, the present picture is a work of high quality by a German artist working in Rome around 1840. It strongly depends on Joseph Anton Koch, but also on the Classicism of Poussin.
