Notes: Moving away from his deep involvement with line and caricature, Jeune femme endormie exposes a more peaceful and realistic presentation of the artist's most popular and widely recognised subject matter: woman. In this work, Pascin continues to articulate his figure with outline (inspired from his interest in Japanese wood block prints), yet the rigidity of drawing is superseeded by a freer, more spontaneous style through the inclusion of oil paint. Colour is used evocatively yet delicately, to celebrate and honour his vision of modern femininity, creating a soft shimmering surface in this work. The vulgarity and licentiousness of modern life that he often satirised so avidly, are exchanged for a more quiet observation, where colour becomes the central gesture for a new sensory experience expressed by this discreet viewer.

To be included in vol. V of the Pascin Catalogue raisonné being prepared by Gerard and Abel Rambert.
