History of the Great Synagogue in Bucharest by Rabbi Dr. Meyer Abraham HaLevy. It was built in 1846 and inaugurated on Rosh Hashana 1847. It was the largest synagogue in Romania for a long period of time. In 1860 it was damaged by nationalistic rioters protesting the rights that the Jews had been granted. It was again damaged during the Legionnare's Rebellion and the Bucharest Pogrom in 1941. It underwent renovation and expansion and was recognized as an architectural treasure and a protected historic site. Photo of the exterior and interior of the synagogue from 1903. Rabbi Avraham Meyer HaLevi was the Rabbi of the community and synagogue through 1936. He was a Jewish-Romanian historian and publicist. Especially rare and important.
