JOSEPH CHRISTIAN LEYENDECKER (after)
Couple Dancing.

Oil on canvas, 1921. 965x678 mm; 38x26 3/4 inches. Signed "Leyendecker," dated and inscribed "N.Y." in oil, lower right.

By the end of the 19th-century, Leyendecker became the most sought after illustrator of his day. He reached the peak of his fame and productivity in the 1930s and became a mentor to an entire generation of younger artists, most notably Norman Rockwell.

A representation of Leyendecker's iconic "Arrow Collar" man, which he first created in 1905. The artist's ad campaigns for Arrow Collars (later Arrow Shirts) from 1905 to 1930, with their dashing portraits of chiseled male models--counterpoint of the ubiquitous Gibson Girl--and swooning women, helped make Arrow the largest shirt brand in America.

Due to the tremendous success of the Arrow campaign, Leyendecker's studio was commissioned to produce copies of his iconic images for high end department stores around the country. The current work is likely the product of such a request.
