Cotman visited Chepstow whilst touring South Wales in the summer of 1800. He was at Caldicot Castle on 1st August and by the 4th had reached Goodrich Castle on the Wye.

A pen and wash view of the river Wye at Chepstow bearing the number '13' in brown ink verso was offered at Sotheby's 13th March 1980, lot 64.
