A windmill, Blackheath signed with initials 'JSC' (lower left), inscribed and numbered '109 Mills Black Heath' (on a fragment of the original mount attached to the current mount) pencil and watercolour on oatmeal paper 6 3/8 x 10 7/8 in. (16.1 x 27.6 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Tallahassee, Florida, U.S.A. with Thos. Deans & Co., Florida (to Agnew's on behalf of the present owner). NOTES This watercolour is a rare example of Cotman's work from his honeymoon in London in 1809. Cotman married Ann Miles on 6 January and then took her to London. Two drawings from this trip, a pencil drawing and a watercolour of Cheyne Walk, are known: in 1937 the drawing was in the collection of Sydney Kitson, and the watercolour is now in the Norwich Castle Museum (see S. Kitson, The Life of John Sell Cotman, London, 1937, illustrated opp. p. 129). In 1810 Cotman exhibited a watercolour of The north end of Battersea Bridge at the Norwich Society of Artists, and a watercolour of a Beached barge beneath Battersea Bridge has recently been identified in the Hickman Bacon Collection, again dating from this period.
