Notes: The sitter is probably John Marriott, the son of Thomas Marriott of Whitchurch, Warwickshire (1631-91) and his first wife, Lucy Anne, daughter of Sir Richard Brawne of Alscot. Thomas Marriott served as M.P. for Warwickshire in 1681 and was also Sheriff of Warwickshire 1677-78. The sitter was the father of Theodosia who married Vincent Lowe, of Denby and Locko Park. Vincent was the son of John Lowe of Denby, J.P. for Derbyshire.
Alscot Park was a fine estate lying mainly in the parish of Preston-on-Stour, just south of Stratford upon Avon. The sitter's son, Richard, was responsible for altering the house in the 1720s and he was probably responsible for the formal layout of the gardens and the arrangement of the avenues.
