Description: VIEW OF DOLBADERN CASTLE, NORTH WALES
Medium: oil on panel
Dimensions: 22 by 27.5 cm., 8 3/4 by 10 3/4 in.
Notes: Dolbadern Castle stands above Llyn Padarn, between Caenarfon and Snowdonia. It was built by the Welsh princes in the thirteenth century to provide a blockade for anyone passing throught that part of North Wales. By 1400 the castle had fallen into disuse, but its simply designed central round tower has survived.
The wild landscape of Snowdonia, and Dolbadern Castle itself was a popular subject in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Amongst others the subject was painted by Turner in 1800, a work which is now in the Royal Academy of Arts.
