CATALOGUE NOTE
In 1829 Linnell started to build himself a new house in Porchester Terrace. To help pay for this he arranged to pay his workers with portraits of themselves and their families in lieu of cash. In an entry in his sketchbook for 13th December 1831 Linnell records that he 'made a sketch for portrait of Mrs Bolding'. In January 1832 he gave sittings to the two daughters of Mr and Mrs Bolding. Mr Bolding's portrait was painted in Feburary and in March Linnell records that 'Mr Bolding came and mended pump & took away his two pictures of himself and Mrs Bolding. Signed the bill as settlement'.
