An apple tree signed with initials and dated 'J.L. 1811-' (lower right) pencil and watercolour, heightened with touches of bodycolour 53/4 x 4 in. (14.6 x 10.2 cm.) NOTES This watercolour was executed when Linnell lived at 11 Queen Street off Edgware Road. The handling is close to Bayswater and Kensington Gardens, see M. Gregory, John Linnell Truth to Nature, London, 8-20 November 1982, exhibition catalogue no. 19. despite being relatively freely painted Gregory writes that Linnell's watercolours from nature of 1811 'always show nature in the most precisely defined way' loc. cit.
