Enneking," American Magazine of Art, June 1917, pp. 320-325In its focus on a small, brilliantly lit patch of garden, probably at the artist's summer house in North Newry, Maine, Flowers in a Garden has, as Rodriguez Roque observes, as great an affinity with Twachtman's garden still-lifes of the same period as it does with Enneking's own more typical landscape vistas. Its vivid colors and spontaneous brushwork exemplify the artist's own particular brand of Impressionism, described by his contemporary, critic Ralph Davol, as follows: "He divided tones into their primary elements and obtained color vibrations by laying on fresh paint in gentle, juicy pounces with a narrow brush, carefully tucking in the edges of his strokes to preserve a delicate, volatile play of light...".
