A bird's-eye view of a town and port on this small island off the Massachusetts coast. The inset at top reflects Nantucket's history and former glory as "The Whaling Capital of the World". Drawn in the distinctive illustrative style of John Held Jr., one of the top cartoonists in the 1920s and 1930s. Held was a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, Redbook and other popular magazines. His flapper girls were a tremendous sensation, becoming the visual epitomization of the roaring 20s.
