Description:
signed and dated l.r.: John Brett 1890 (incised); bears an inscription on the stretcher: Moorland View near Ilkley/ John Brett ARA
oil on canvas
Notes: This work, which was based on the sketch of 13 September 1890, was sold to Brett's friend and patron Willie Pye in February 1891 for £100. The inscription 'Moorland View near Ilkley' on the stretcher (not in Brett's hand) is clearly inaccurate; and at some point the picture was placed in a frame made for another work (Treyanon Bay). The view is of Whitby from Fylingdales Moor, with the ruins of Whitby Abbey visible on the skyline, to the right of the town.
