Fairy Mab (I) gehört wie das Schweigen (Los 46) zum 47-teiligen Gemäldezyklus zu John Miltons epischer Dichtung 'Das verlorene Paradies'. Auf dem Bild sind oben zitierte Zeilen aus dem Vers 'L'Allegro' illustriert. Dargestellt ist die Feenkönigin Mab im Vordergrund, während hinter ihrer linken Schulter der zwergenhafte Begleiter Brownie auszumachen ist. Laut der Sage, die durch William Shakespeares Romeo und Julia bekannt geworden ist, verzehrt die Fairy Mab in der Nacht die Vorräte der Bauern - ihr bevorzugtes Gericht sind die sogenannten Junkets, eine gesüsste Quarkspeise.


Fairy Mab (I) belongs, like Schweigen (Lot 46), to the 47-piece series of paintings relating to John Milton's epic poem 'Paradise Lost'. Illustrated in the painting are the lines from the verse 'L'Allegro', quoted above. The fairy queen Mab is depicted in the foreground, while located behind her left shoulder is one of her dwarf companions, Brownie. According to the legend, which became well-known through William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the fairy Mab consumes the provisions of farmers during the night - her preferred dish is so-called Junkets, a sweetened pudding.
