JEAN PROUVE (1901-1984) The Prototype Large Maison Tropicale for Brazzaville, 1950-51 of rectangular floor plan, the double aluminum roof extending over the interior space and a walkway to form a veranda, with openings along the long side of the interior space and the ridge pole allowing for a natural air ventilation system, all load bearing parts in bent steel sheets, all covering parts in bent aluminum sheets, two internal steel axial porticos supporting the three-part central ridge pole that supports the aluminum roof, the four walls comprising 29 aluminum facade panels, eight of which are pierced with portholes inset with blue glass to protect against UV rays, eleven sliding aluminum door panels pierced with portholes inset with blue glass, four hinged aluminum door panels pierced with portholes inset with blue glass, all with fixing elements, walkway surrounding the structure floored with iroko grating, enclosed on all sides by pierced aluminum railing panels, the upper part with 81 adjustable aluminum louver panels with 28 adjusting rods, the interior room with aluminum ceiling, five interior double-walled aluminum panels with insulation forming an optional room-divider with one hinged door, the interior steel floor covered with modern iroko and rubber boat decking (not designed by Jean Prouvé) replacing the original linoleum the entire structure raised on primary steel beams, resting on three rows of seven modern short, telescopic adjustable pillars (not designed by Jean Prouvé), designed as a replacement for the original concrete foundation the prototype was placed on in Brazzaville with two modern access stairs (not designed by Jean Prouvé) and with original connecting platform Height of prototype Maison Tropicale from floor to top of ridge pole: 16 feet (4.9 meters) Exterior length: 59 feet (18 meters) Exterior width: 32 feet 80 inches (10 meters) Length of interior room: 52 feet 49 inches (16 meters) Width of interior room: 19 feet 68 inches (6 meters) Height of interior room: 9 feet 84 inches (3 meters) Height of short, telescopic adjustable pillars ranging from 26 7/8 inches (68 cm.) to 38 1/2 inches (98 cm.)
