Description:
RESSACS signed and dated "56"; signed and titled on the reverse, titled and dated on the stretcher on the reverse oil on canvas 81 by 100 cm. 31 3/4 by 39 1/4 in. This fine painting is an excellent example of Riopelle's greatest contribution to painting in the twentieth century. The structure, colour, technique and handling are all evidence of the artist still at full strength and capable of delivering, as he has done here, a memorable and thoroughly likeable masterwork. His Ressacs is a mature and confident expression of the years when Riopelle was at the pinnacle of his powers; a few years later his originality had begun to wane and his production was never again as well-organized, taut, thoughtful or powerful as it is here. This work is in the Riopelle Catalogue Raisonné as no. 1956.034H.1956.
